Who We Are
The Indeps have always been around, and always will be. It's not hard for that to be the case - they're not a faction, nor even really an organised collective. They just... are.
Still, those who shun the factions and take on the name "Indep" often find a kinship within each other. They unite behind their shared rejection of the factions that dominate Sigil.
The numbers of the Free League have been dwindling for some time now, not least of all because of the increasing persecution from the Harmonium. In part, this is due to Anarchist recruits 'pinging' as Indeps, causing any member of the Free League to be seen as a potential Anarchist-in-training.
The Indeps have no leaders nor any faction headquarters. They do congregate in certain 'Independent' taverns and almshouses, and a few may even try to warn the Clueless about the nature of the factions and steer them clear of being drawn in.

An Indep's Journey (Live and Let Live)
There is no journey for the Indeps, not any faction ranks nor initiation process. Truth is, anyone who is not a member of another faction is technically an 'Indep', whether they like it or not.
This statement, was, in fact, used to prove the truth that the Free League was not a faction, as per the case of Sigil v. Bader (the result leading to the formation of an entirely new faction).
Faction Mechanics & Character Options
All members of the Indeps are raised independently [get it? -M] of any doctrine or teachings, save perhaps that the faction system is bad and to stay away from it.
Truth is, life within the Indeps just looks like life. Still, a list of suggested bonds within and philosophical ideals is presented below for those interested in leaning into the Independent lifestyle.
d4 | Faction Draw (Ideal) |
---|---|
1 | Anger, I lost someone to the faction system, and now they've gone off the rails |
2 | Open Mind, I'm not against the factions. It's just that none of them have caught my mind yet |
3 | Cast Out, I was a member of a faction once upon a time. I broke their 'laws', and got cast out |
4 | Clueless, I still don't get the deal with all these 'factions'. Can't we just be free to think what we want? |
d4 | Faction Friend (Bonds) |
---|---|
1 | Ronmod, a rogue modron artist who takes inspiration from faction rivalries in their street art |
2 | Jenna Irena, a merchant who keeps their stores as faction agnostic as possible to widen their customer base |
3 | Tulgsi, a Slaad who just arrived in Sigil |
4 | Wild Card, a member of another faction who hates me |
Faction Restriction
Members of the Free League (not that they have members) face no restrictions.
Roleplaying an Indep
Style and Flair
Do what you want! Be Independent. When member of the Indeps want to make themselves known as such, they use a variety of symbols that change whenever the Harmonium catch on. Right now, the unofficial faction symbol is a winding path heading towards a sunset horizon.
A "Good" Indep...
- Does not take kindly to attempts to 'recruit' them.
Faction Powers
Members of the Free League do not have any faction power progression, largely because they are not members of a faction in the first place.
If you are particularly adamant regarding your 'live free or die' stance, you may take the following power to represent your devotion to free will.
When you make a skill check or saving throw against an effect that would attempt to influence how you perceive something (so as a charm spell or being convinced with a series of aggressive charts), you may spend Inspiration to replace the result shown on the die with a 13.
