Welcome to Planescape Reimagined! Here you will find a mostly-faithful retelling of a much-loved setting from decades back.
What this is
- A fan project for her personal Dungeons and Dragons game.
- A conversion of the 2nd edition City of Doors and all (well, most) of its factions into 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons.
- A retelling of Sigil that maintains the 15 Factions and their rivalries whilst modernising many of their themes and removing some of their problematic elements.
- New faction-related backgrounds (at least one per faction, with many having several), new lineages and new items; not to mention Faction Powers and Restrictions for each faction, and a brief history of their leaders and headquarters in the city.
- Set around 30 years after the AD&D version of Sigil. Most of the post-AD&D events have not happened in this Fanon.
- The work of a GM and her players that is the cumulation of around 4 years work and games.
What this is not
- A like-for-like conversion of the AD&D setting. Whilst most things have been kept intact, some things - namely two of the factions - have been replaced in order to help state some of the major themes. Industrialisation and commercialisation were always present in Sigil, and I wanted to keep those themes in line with current times whilst maintaining them as truthfully as I could.
- Anything remotely official. This is one GM’s love letter to her players and a setting she grew up with. Bits of At the end of the day, this is the direction I saw the Cage developing in a way that kept its rich history alive whilst simultaneously advancing it forwards.
- Post-Faction War. There are fifteen factions in Sigil still. The faction war, as written, did not happen in this canon. Instead, see the events of the Second Upheaval.
Why?
Whilst there are many Planescape 5e conversion out there, few are finished, and there are fewer still that detail the City of Doors in a way that kept the factions alive as major influences. To me, the factions and the intensity of their beliefs are what makes Sigil Sigil, and so I wanted to convert the old AD&D copy of the Cage into a 5th edition, 21st century setting (as some elements certainly needed changing).
What’s Changed?
- Two factions have dissolved and disbanded, their members moving to other places: the Believers of the Source (Godsmen) and the Fated (Takers). The Indeps still exist, but very much as an officially-not-a-faction.
- Three new factions have emerged: the People’s Collective for Sustainable Development (Greeners), League of Innovation (Thinkers) and the Consortium (Traders). In short: Environmental barmies, mad scientists, and capitalists respectively.
- All original Factols have either died, been displaced or moved on.
- Portals to all new D&D settings have cropped up within the Cage, those to Tal’dorei and Geth have had particular impact on the Cage’s development.
